Lately we've been getting lots of phone calls from customers with tomato plant issues. It's almost impossible to diagnose problems over the phone, so we ask that a plant sample be brought in so we can see what's going on. One of the more common problems people are having with their tomatoes are the plants dropping their blossoms. A calcium deficiency or weather conditions (cool nights) are usually the reason for this happening. I've been experiencing this in my garden and have been using a product called Tomato Bloom Spray by Green Light. So far, it seems to be helping as long as I use it consistently. My tomato plants are full of blossoms and the blossoms are being replaced by fruit! When I find a product that works for me, I like to share it with others. We sell ready-to-use Tomato Bloom Spray in the store for $5.99. Another product that seems to work well is Foli-Cal from the Monterey product line. It is a 10% calcium concentrate foliar spray that supplies nutrients directly to the foliage and fruit of crops. Since it's sold in the concentrate form, it's perfect for larger gardens with several plants. If organic gardening is for you, I recommend Neptune's Harvest Crab Shell with 23% calcium. It is a crab shell fertilizer and we sell it either in a large tub or by 4-oz scoops for $.79 - (It also helps with nematode and fungus problems.) I'm definitely going to be trying this one!
If you're having problems with any plant, bring a sample to the nursery so one of our professionals can diagnose it and send you home with the necessary products for your gardening success!
