What We Do

Natural Pruning

Unlike other services that specialize in just lawn care, we know how to prune each plant to bring out it’s natural beauty. We create a more natural effect by selectively pruning branches. Natural pruning also allows the plants to flower at their peak, and is an easier way to maintain the plants, making your job easier once we’ve left.

Fertilizing

A good fertilizer can make all the difference between a struggling garden, and one that really shines. As part of our service, our garden experts will diagnose and identify any nutrient deficiencies in your garden.

Weed Control

Weeds are every home-owner’s enemy. Don’t live with them! An effective weed control regimen can reduce or eliminate most of your weed problems.

Flower Beds

Designing an eye-catching flower bed can be harder than it seems. Our consulant will design and the Garden Crew will install your annual and perennial flower beds for you.

I have wanted to include some pictures of our maintenance work . However, it is often difficult to show in pictures about what we accomplish. With pruning it is easier, but we have to remember to get good before pictures as well as after pictures. Recently I did a pruning project on a contorted Filbert that was 6' tall and never pruned artistically. Unfortunately, again, I forgot the before pictures.

When I did some pruning on a lace leaf maple I did get some before pictures as well as after pictures. This was one I have pruned a few times before, but with lace leaf maples to keep them open so you can see the structure, it is a yearly affair.

 Sample Image

This is the before picture. As you can see the lower structure is visible but the upper structure is completely hidden. I went through the entire tree thinning excess branches removing excess larger branches and lifting the layering to emphasize the layer effect and allow the structure to come out.

I think you can see the difference a critical eye can make.

I filled a green dumpster almost full with the prunings and yet I don't think you can think the tree was butchered!

We recently finished refurbishing an older garden in Modesto. It had a small walkway to the drive. The street tree was mounding the soil around it about 16-18 inches. It had a wonderful pruned bonsai style Japanese Black Pine and a large Canary Island Pine.

 Sample Image

We removed the walk way, extended the porch both as a landing and to allow the bench to fit more comfortably. We widened the walk and added some flagstones to make a path from the street.

To accomodate the zelkova street tree we added a stacked block wall to hold the soil and create a sitting area. We made the lawn much smaller and added some plants with interesting textures and foliage colors. It was designed to be easy care with lots of room for plants to grow.

All in all I think this was a successful refurbish. Interesting new look while still in character with the house and neighborhood.

Jim and Donna's garden revisited Print E-mail

Donna and I are continuing to make progress with our front garden. What I would like to share with you are a couple of plants that are making some progress.

Sample Image

Red bud Don Egolf

First is a new compact growing red bud, Don Egolf. Don Egolf is a new variety that apparently gets to about 8-10 ft tall and wide. It has typical magenta pink blooms all up and down the stem in the early spring. This plant is about 18 months established. Besides being more compact than most redbuds it is seedless. A real advantage.

Rose Pink Drift

Next is a new shrub rose we planted called Pink Drift. This is a new compact shrub rose that so far seems to grow as a low ground cover. These have been in the ground for less that one year and have been in continuous bloom since we planted them My favorite landscape rose has been Starry Night pictured below also, but as you can tell there is a lot of difference in size. The Drift roses are going to be usable in a lot more spaces.

Donna and I have been working on our yard and our first major project was to redo our small back yard. It is small, dominated by a giant sycamore and generally un usable. The Garden Crew has been working on putting in a paver patio shaped by a stacking block planter.
